چکیده

Results The results of the histologic workup were as follows: 74 (45%) were benign nodules and 90 were malignant; 73 of the malignant nodules were classical papillary thyroid cancers, 10 were the follicular variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), 5 were follicular cancers, and 2 were medullary cancers. Of these nodules, 37 had a diameter <1 cm and 58 were positive for BRAF mutations, 54 of which harbored the mutation V600E. BRAF mutation analysis was particularly useful in nodules with high elasticity (scale 1), in which the malignancy would have been missed without it. BRAF mutations were detected in 70% of all PTCs.

Diagnostic Benefit of Thyroglobulin Measurement in Fine-Needle Aspiration for Diagnosing Metastatic Cervical Lymph Nodes from Papillary Thyroid Cancer: Correlations with US Features

OBJECTIVE Our goals were to determine the added value of fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB)-thyroglobulin (Tg) measurements over FNAB-cytology alone for diagnosing metastatic nodes, and to determine whether the ultrasound features of lymph nodes can be used to identify lymph nodes that may benefit from FNAB-Tg measurement in patients with papillary thyroid cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS We r...

Fine-needle aspiration biopsy versus ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration biopsy: cost-effectiveness as a frontline diagnostic modality for solitary thyroid nodules.

BACKGROUND Ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration biopsy (ultrasound-guided FNAB) is considered the diagnostic test of choice when a fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) returns an inconclusive diagnosis because of cytologic ambiguity or paucity of specimen. METHODS Cost-effectiveness analysis utilizing a decision tree was used to model the diagnostic strategies. The decision analysis model...

Fine needle aspiration cytology guided by ultrasound in the diagnosis of subcentimetre thyroid nodules

BACKGROUND This study aimed to investigate the value of fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) under ultrasound guidance in diagnosis of thyroid nodules. In a retrospective analysis of FNAB in 1050 cases of patients with 1100 nodules, patients were divided according to the maximum diameter of their nodules into two groups: >1.0 and ≤1.0 cm. The ultrasound-guided FNAB cytology results were compare...

Diagnostic value of ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration biopsy in malignant thyroid nodules: utility for micronodules.

BACKGROUND The diagnostic approach to thyroid nodules involves ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration biopsy (US-FNAB).We especially aimed to evaluate the contribution and the place of US-FNAB in preoperative evaluation of the malignant cases and draw attention to discordant cases diagnosed with papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC). MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 276 cases were retrosp...

Pre-operative diagnosis of thyroid cancer: clinical, radiological and pathological correlation.

AIM Ultrasonography and fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) are the mainstays of diagnosing thyroid cancer accurately and reducing the number of diagnostic lobectomies. No benchmark for diagnostic accuracy has been published in the South African context. This single-institution study addresses this deficit. METHODS The oncology, pathology and surgical records of all patients diagnosed with t...
